Get Stuffed, St. John's – Restaurant ReviewFine and Casual Dining in Newfoundland, Comfort Food with a Twist
Located in the downtown area of historic St. John's, 190 Duckworth Street, Get Stuffed is surely one of the finest newcomers to the fine dining scene in Newfoundland.
Get Stuffed on Duckworth is a very unassuming spectacle at first glance – a fairly modest facade with simple black lettering advertises the local eatery, next to local staples Fred's Music and Posie Row. The modesty ends there, however, as the dining experience at Get Stuffed is anything but mediocre. Beautiful Decor, Romantic and Charming Ambience with Swift, Professional ServiceEntering the restaurant, one is immediately impressed by the obvious attention to detail accorded to the décor and ambience inside. Beautiful wooden tables with just the right amount of antique authenticity grace the downstairs level – the restaurant is two stories, a converted townhouse with a beautiful view – and the lighting is low, romantic, and intimate. Table service at Get Stuffed is accordingly swift, professional, and extremely attentive. It is apparent that the serving staff take great passion in their positions, as they engage with diners on the topics of preparation and spice with interest and knowledge. Fresh cracked pepper is always offered to diners, along with a complimentary dish of specially spiced fried wontons and dip – light, crispy, and extremely flavourful. Delicious Entrees and Appetizers, Comfort Food with a TwistThe menu offerings at Get Stuffed are certainly somewhat unique – particularly in that their menu system offers entrees specifically a la carte, allowing the diner to select their side dishes individually, separate from their choice of entree. Particular standouts on the menu include a beautifully prepared breaded chicken breast in a mild hazelnut sauce, as well as a simply delectable meatloaf served on a creamy bed of sour cream and green onion whipped potatoes complimented by an expertly crafted mushroom reduction. The side dishes available are also extremely interesting and unique, including one particular entry that bears specific mention – entitled cheese n' doo. Featuring spiral “Scooby Doo” noodles in a rich gruyere cheese sauce with leek and optional proscuitto, topped off with mozzarella and then briefly baked – this dish is both filling and extremely inventive. Unlike many restaurants which advertise approachable fine dining food with a creative twist but fail to deliver – Get Stuffed performs excellently by any standard of the imagination. Affordable, Approachable for Fine or Casual DiningGet Stuffed comes highly recommended both to tourists looking for an excellent alternative to the ubiquitous pub fare in downtown St. John's, Newfoundland as well as local townies and baymen looking for something a little different that will satisfy the deepest of hunger pangs. Two a la carte entrees, two side dishes, and a shared desert total ~$60 with taxes and appropriate tip – extremely surprising value given the super quality and presentation of the food.
